English Language Arts (ELA)

English Language Arts is taught through whole group instruction and small groups. During whole group instruction, teachers do interactive read alouds to introduce topics and allow class discussion to clarify misconceptions and ensure understanding. During small groups, teachers pull students to meet their needs in a topic whether that is reviewing, reteaching, or extending a student's learning.

Chocowinity Primary School uses the Wonders program to engage students through, reading, writing, and speaking. To teach phonics, we use the Heggerty program. We also use the apps Reading Horizons, Lexia, and Epic! during station time to allow students to work on the literacy skills that they need the most help with, as all these apps are adjusted to the pace of each student.

The following ELA components are taught at CPS:

  • Phonics and Phonemic Awareness

  • Comprehension

  • Fluency

  • Vocabulary

  • Writing
